I'm surprised it's not in Aussieland. I know the canucks celebrate it (although they have their own groundhog (Wiarton Willy, not Punxatawny Phil)).

Apparently, if a groundhog comes out of its hole (from hibernation) and sees its shadow, then it turns around and heads back in. However, if a groundhog comes out of its hole and doesn't see its shadow, then it goes out.

So on Groundhog's Day, it's taken as a forecast. If the groundhog comes out and sees its shadow (i.e. it's a sunny day), then there will be six weeks more winter. If the groundhog cannot see its shadow (i.e. it's cloudy, there's a blizzard, &c), then winter is coming to an end.

Apparently, its origin is Candlemas, a European tradition. Although, they used a hedgehog, not a groundhog.

Anyway, the date is February 2nd and it's a semi-big deal over here. The president shows up in Punxatawny, Pennsylvania and takes a couple of photos with Punxatawny Phil the groundhog.

Guess it doesn't mean much for Aussies, being on the Southern hemisphere and all. I propose July 2nd become recognized as some-indiginous-Aussie-hibernating-mammal day as a result. ; )

Wow, that is so very interesting that an animal is a weather forcaster.
What drugs where your forfathers on to discover that form of weather casting?
Sorry, dont mean to be rude but that is very strange!
Probibly not for you as you have always been around it but from the outsider its all very strange!
Maybe we could start Wombat Day, or Koala Day they both sleep all the time.

If I recall correctly, there's actually something to it. Just remember though, the practice dates back to the 1600s, so in all probability, as an Aussie, they're your forefathers too. ; )

Of course, I'm assuming that you're of penal blood, not aboriginal.

Hmmm, Koalas are world renowned and cute, but wombats are so cool!!! I think it'd have to be Wombat Day 8) Shoot, I'll celebrate it. I'll get some of my Aussie and Kiwi friends in on it too ; ) You figure that July 2nd's about right? You could go find some poor unsuspecting wombat, pull it out of the hole and set it on the ground.

Hmmm, it needs a name now...I guess it would depend really on where you find the wombat. After all, Punxatawny Phil is in Punxatawny and Wiarton Willy is in Wiarton. I imagine any alliterative name would do ; )

the only problem is that our seasons are back to front... our winter is your summer and vice-versa so we r gonna have to find a mutual day around spring or autum (fall). :D

Shoot, maybe you could get the Queen out there ; ) At the very least, you could get that Steve Irwin guy out. "This wombat's _HUGE_!!!! Let's see what happens when I lift it up by the fur on its backside! Crikey! It looks REALLY upset!"

Maybe Midnight Oil would write a song about it ; )

I imagine I'll leave that to you. My knowledge of Australian geography is limited to submarine bases in World War II and second-hand from my sister's journeys.

gotta watch out for tha damn wombats crossing the road.
even if your in a truck its like hitting a huge boulder & does a lot of damage to the trucks but the wombat just seems to wander on across to the otherside.

Ahh yes, we have deer here with the same precautions.

My friend cmoog has a laptop named Wombat, coincidentally. I don't think he's up for putting it in front of a truck in the interest of testing though ; )

I was figuring you guys could hold Wombat Day on July 2nd or so. That's 6 months after Groundhog's day, so that should be about right ; )

Sadly, our Northern American critters are way more boring than Aussie critters.

In any case, celebrate Wombat Day on July 2nd! You could even put it on the 4th to poke fun at us Yanks! =D

Well, I know that Talk Like A Pirate day was essentially started by Dave Barry. Anyone like that in Australia that you can get your hands on?
