One short bit -- Liberty University's student affairs page

Notable -- academic dishonesty, sex (presumed or otherwise), and an abortion get you in an equal amount of trouble.

Entirely wacko with respect to my value system, but consider the source (both me and that the university employs Jerry Falwell).

eyeep.

I actually knew someone who went to that college. Never knew that there was such a strict reprimand system.

craziness.

I can't imagine surviving that sort of scrutiny.

Isn't Liberty University sort of an ironic name considering how restrictive their regulations are? It seems like the sort of casual tossing around (and frequent misuse) we encounter with other words like "patriotic" of "unpatriotic". Among the aims listed on "The Liberty Way" page is:

"Promote an understanding of the Western tradition and the diverse elements of American cultural history, especially the importance of the individual in maintaining democratic and free market processes."

Note in the index of regulations that video games containing criminal violence are unacceptable, but violent military video games are OK.

Heh... this actually reminds me of something I read recently in some Christian fellow's xanga; apparently, his father had wanted to be an astronaut, but the church that saved him forbade people from going to college, so he forfeited his scholarships and became a house painter.

Yeah, there's tons of horrible stories like that. Allowing that sort of control on one's life is unthinkable to me.

Yet, we were all children once. Apparently some would think we still are.

I hadn't noticed the violent military games bit 8) Interesting distinction 8)

You would think that burning in hell for all of eternity would be punishment enough for getting an abortion or having sex, but no! you get thrown out of school, too!

I also don't think Jerry Falwell is just an employee, I think he was the founder of Liberty University. I think he is one of the most hideous people alive, and I will never, ever say a positive thing about him.

Yeah, I think he founded it as well. I meant by employee that he's involved in its continuing operation. At least, that's the affiliation I see with his name most of the time.

In my view, this is the second time in American Christianity's history that this sort of thing has gone over. We had predestination and the concept that anyone who wasn't part of the elect was to be shunned, starved, and gotten rid of. Now we have the opposite view where it's believed people have a choice in their destiny, but you're meant to be punished if you cross the line.

It's truly bizarre, yet perversely fascinating that people survive in that environment. But then again, they're still tamer than Scientology.

There are a lot of universities with codes like that. Goodle Christian Universities and you'll find them.

No social dancing? Expecting women to dress 'modestly'? No spending the night anywhere in mixed company? Never being alone with an individual of the opposite sex that is private? No consumption of alcohol or tobacco products regardless of age? Room checks for cleanliness and vulgar art or music. That just wouldn't work for me at all.

Yeah, I can't imagine it at all.

It says a lot about how liberal we are compared to the other extreme in the country.
