Some little 7 year old part of me has finally been fulfilled.

A very long time ago, I woke up at around 5:30am and turned on the TV in the living room. Flipping through channels, I found something suitably animated.

In it, there were three people standing on this beach and a unicorn being chased by a giant red creature. One of them was a magician (you could tell by his pointy hat), one was a woman, and one of the others was some sort of swordsman.

The woman tells the magician to save the unicorn. The magician says he can't. The swordsman says "Well what good is magic if it can't save a unicorn?" The magician says "That's what a hero's for."

The hero goes forth and is killed by the monster. The unicorn then begins to fight back and eventually pushes the monster into the waves.

I didn't really remember anything more than that, but I was hooked when I heard that bit of dialogue. So much so that I waited until the credits rolled and stood about 6" away from the TV so that I could read them as they zipped by. I had hoped to catch the name of the show.

The name of that movie was The Last Unicorn. I carried that name with me for quite some time. I mentioned it to my friend Lindsay one day and she started raving on and on about it. I planned to eventually see it.

I found out a couple of years ago (when it came up in Fortune) that it was initially a book by Peter S. Beagle. It was animated by Rankin-Bass.

This afternoon at lunch, I finally did. It was an exceptional movie. I can't wait to get ahold of the book now.

One last bit: I was chatting with a friend in IRC. Apparently, there's some cool computer hardware that his place of employment is going to offload in Monterey. Yippee!

All quiet on the job front.

I was thinking while we were watching of things that could be done better in a remake. But oh man how am I going to wait until 2006+?!

googling it, there's a bunch of talk but it seems the project died. the author wants you to buy a DVD from him, though. poor guy.
