First thing's first: A very happy birthday to neurosynner (who I've known for less than 24 hours). Speaking of firsts, I do believe that's the first happy birthday I've posted.
This is exactly the sort of thing that the blink tag was meant for HTML. Nothing says you care about impending increments like wildly flashing bright colors. Especially if you're a Japanese schoolkid.
Since birthdays tend to be a time of reflection and realizing just how old you are, I'll grant her this:
10 PRINT "WOO! IT'S YOUR BIRTHDAY!"
12 FOR I=1 TO 500
14 NEXT I
20 PRINT "AND YOU AREN'T HAVING SURGERY!"
22 FOR I=1 TO 500
24 NEXT I
30 PRINT "THAT'S A HAPPY BIRTHDAY RIGHT THERE!"
32 FOR I=1 TO 500
34 NEXT I
40 PRINT "OH YEAH!"
42 FOR I=1 TO 1000
44 NEXT I
50 GOTO 10
Timing is intended for a TRS-80 (a 1 MHz Z-80 chip).
I'm driving to San Diego. Wooo! For just one moment though, I'd love to teleport to Salt Lake City, Utah to say it in person. =D
Wonder where she was...Oh well.
If BASIC, old hardware references, and dubious claims of sudden geographic displacement don't quite do it, I recommend this site. Reminds of Korean war vets who would ship home jeeps one part at a time for no apparent reason.
After that, I recommend a (brain|cerebral) (tumor|hemmorrage). The yummy kind. Of course, you live in Utah, so that might not be simple ; )
Why thank you !
I think the gift of an old basic program hits the age close enough to the mark ...
Think punch cards, think tape drives, think VMS !
( or actually try very very hard not to think about those sorts of things )
I had a trash 80 model 16 when I was 13.. it replaced the teleltype with hard copy display and acoustic couple 110 / 300 baud modem.
Do you even remember when you could buy programs on vinal ? Yes thats right kiddies , 33 1/3 rpm vinal records with programs in BASIC ! Be very greatful ..
High tech plastic whistles and vinal records are all but memories and souvineres ..
we werent yelling HACK THE PLANET !
HUNT THE WUMPUS !
and dont you live near some repository of OLD computers framed up as a museup .. I hear they have just about everything , even some old Crays ?
I have thought about a pilgrimage for some time ...
I never did vinyl, but I do have stacks and stacks and stacks of cassette tapes ; ) The transfer was probably the same with maddeningly sensitive volume controls.
I believe I still possess the ability to slam a handset into rubber cups perfectly. My 110 baud conditioned me well at an early age ; )
For its time, the TRS-80 model 16 was less than remarkable. Fortunately, they corrected that with the Tandy 1000. Two fine examples of that sit across the house from me as I write this.
I do live near such a museum. Arguably, I also live in such a museum.
Should you wish to visit either, it would be an undue pleasure to facilitiate such.
And personally? I was too busy looking for the Amulet of Yendor ; )

HAHAHAHAH PONY HUMOR AHHAAHHAHA
i am currently petting the nose of the pony on my back. BECAUSE I AM A SIX YEAR OLD.
Suddenly, so much is explained ; )relsqui
went digging for your LJ when I found out you had one. I instantly knew the photo in your userinfo, of course.
I suppose you were trying to SAVE
me from more BASIC humor? Tell me, what do you CALL
your pony? ; )

I CALL HIM "50 GOTO 10"
no, wait. that's not a pun.
