It's been a long while since I've read anything of his. I have my 11th grade English teacher to thank for introducing me to his work -- she said she couldn't stand his writing. I think that effectively shows the overall poor quality of my English teachers.
The sequence that sticks out in my brain right now is in Hocus Pocus where the narrator and a friend of his are on patrol. They'd regularly cross at one point of the patrol and talk to each other while they passed. His friend said "You know what I'd do if I heard they'd dropped a nuclear bomb on New York City?" The next they met, he said with a somber look, "I'd laugh like hell."
Somehow, that seems right.
And so it goes.
