|10:55 am - Veggies + "Atkins is obese" story = insanity|
So I've been knocking out some really..umm..interesting folks over the whole "Atkins was obese" thing in animal_rights.
Here's Snopes' take on it.
The story goes that Atkins was 258 pounds at the time of his death. That's obese for a 6 foot man. The Physicians Council for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) made a big splaash about it and took their time in the sun to promote their agenda: vegetarianism. Lots of veg*ns have had Atkins in their sights for a while now because it promotes (among other things) eating meat.
Dr. Trager, the head of the Atkins Physicians Council said it was a result of fluid retention and that he weighed 195 when admitted.
The PCRM said "Sure, that's part of it, but it's not all of it." Bad diet, blah blah blah.
Turns out that his weight at admittance was corroborated by the hospital records which were turned over to USA Today by Atkins' widow.
So, by conservation of matter, if he weighed 195 when admitted, died 8 days later at 258, and was in a coma the whole time, there's not too many possibilities for where that weight came from.
So I've been dealing with people who have been claiming that the whole thing's a lie and that he didn't really weigh 195 when he was admitted. It's a conspiracy to save the multimillion diet, according to them.
The first gal who really had at it with me finally backed off and conceded the points. Some other dude hopped into it. His whole argument is just that it's a conspiracy. No proof of it or anything. Just endless amounts of "It's all a lie!" I wonder if he's going to back off now that there's even more proof. Somehow, I doubt it.
Perhaps the next gambit is for me to take his argument and claim that Atkins was implanted with liposuction byproducts or something.
I'm so glad I find illogical people entertaining. I'm also glad that I find the confusion over my gender because of my new userpic entertaining ; )
i too agree with snopes - it's debatable. the PCRM and the Atkins Physicians' Council both have stakes in this argument.
I find it hard to swallow that anyone can see weight gained in a comatose state is somehow related to the worth of a diet.
I mean, the thing that should have ended all this is the proof that he weighed 195 going into the hospital. I mean, I can doubt Trager's opinion, but the hospital records? That USA Today and the AP published it? I mean, at some point, reason has to come into this.
I'm envisioning a Cult of Atkins-Was-Obese-iacs forming any day now. ;)
Out of curiousity, are you a vegetarian? I promise not to hold it against you ; )
You might want to point out that PCRM is a PETA front group and that only 5% of its members finished medical school.
It was obvious to me that they were PETArds, but I didn't know that juicy fact. I'd never heard of animalscam.com before. Thanks for the ammo ; )

Animal scam.com is under Center For Consumer Freedom, which is entirely funded by restaurants and food providers. They talk about that in in their about information.
Well then, they're about as reliable as the PCRM, now aren't they?

They're about the same. No-one really knows what happened to Atkins.
